CPW Hybrid grippers were sold by Cannon PowerWorks with different handle diameters on the palm and finger sides. The unequal handles distinguish them from conventional grippers with two matching handles.[1]
Two generations
In November 2018, Matt Cannon announced the return of CPW Hybrids. Earlier examples had been made by Warren Tetting; the new generation was made for Cannon PowerWorks by Robert Baraban.[1]
| Generation | Palm-side handle | Finger-side handle |
|---|---|---|
| Tetting-made | 3/4 inch | 5/8 inch |
| Baraban-made, announced 2018 | 20 mm | 16 mm |
Cannon described the larger palm-side handle as spreading pressure across the hand. The smaller finger-side handle reduced the combined handle thickness at closure. For the Baraban version, this was 36 mm, compared with approximately 38 mm for a pair of conventional 3/4-inch handles.[1]
Surviving examples
A collector record documents a CPW Hybrid 240 rated by Cannon PowerWorks at 145 lb RGC. That is a measurement of the recorded specimen, not a conversion rule for every Hybrid bearing the same model number.[2]
Later availability
In an April 2023 reply to the original announcement, Cannon said he did not plan to bring the line back at that time, citing long production delays. He suggested that any future version would probably be under the Standard name. This was a possibility discussed by the seller, not an announcement of a released replacement.[1]
